Abstract

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to identify the perception about hospice and palliative program offered by Sungju-gun public health center and the needs for the hospice and palliative service in the residents of Sungju-gun.

Method : The subjects of this study were 500 residents who were 20 years old and more. Data were collected from Aug. 6, 2007 to Aug. 31, 2007 with tools developed by researchers. Data were analyzed with SPSS/WIN 12.0 version.
Results : Mean score of the perception about hospice and palliative program offered by Sungju-gun public health center was 8.45(SD 5.75) out of 19.00. There were significant difference in the score of the perception according to the subjects¡¯ age, monthly income, religion, education and marital status. In the needs for hospice and palliative service offered by Sungju-gun public health center, the score of the dimension ¡¯Service Connection¡¯ was highest, 1.75 out of 2.00, and the score of the item ¡¯Assistance for activities in daily living¡¯ in volunteer service was highest, 1.82 out of 2.00. There were significant difference in the score of the needs for hospice and palliative service according to the subjects¡¯ monthly income.

Conclusion : The results showed the perception of the subjects about hospice and palliative program offered by Sungju-gun public health center was low while the perception of the subjects with old age, low income, and low education was relatively high. So, hospice and palliative service programs for these populations service connection and volunteer services are especially strengthened should be developed and actively informed to the residents.
